Retro Racer Revives Le Mans Spirit
California Startup Unveils Modern Take on 1960s Endurance Racer
A new automotive venture is capturing attention by breathing new life into a classic racing concept. Shoreline Bespoke’s LM Coupe project reimagines a road-legal version of a 1960s Le Mans prototype, blending vintage aesthetics with contemporary engineering.
An Analog Machine for Modern Enthusiasts
At its heart, the LM Coupe is powered by a compact, straight-six engine borrowed from BMW’s K1600 motorcycle. Shoreline Bespoke emphasizes a commitment to an analog driving experience. The current prototype, a functional demonstration of the concept, features a tube-frame chassis with the engine and sequential gearbox centrally mounted. Designed to accommodate two adults and carry-on luggage, it tips the scales at a remarkably light 1375 pounds, even without bodywork or a finished interior.
The company projects that the production version will weigh nearly 1000 pounds less than a Mazda Miata and boast a superior power-to-weight ratio compared to a Porsche 911 GT3. This focus on lightness and performance positions the LM Coupe as a unique proposition in the enthusiast market.
Targeting Discerning Drivers
The LM Coupe aims to appeal to two distinct groups: collectors and racers of vintage machinery, and owners seeking exclusivity beyond the common supercar offerings. Initially priced just under $500,000, Shoreline Bespoke is working to bring that figure down to the mid-to-high $300,000 range. This price point positions it as a compelling alternative to established, high-performance machines and even some modern supercars inspired by classic designs.
From Garage Project to Production Goal
Customer deliveries are anticipated by the close of 2027. The next milestone involves constructing a second prototype, which will feature a carbon-fiber body and a complete interior. This ambitious project is the brainchild of Spencer Beckman and Kyle Krueger, who founded Shoreline Bespoke in 2021. The duo, both 29 years old, reportedly built the initial prototype themselves in a friend’s garage.
Spencer Beckman, who earned a degree in motorsport engineering from Oxford Brookes University, previously worked in aerospace manufacturing. He envisioned the LM Coupe as his ideal sports car for Sunday drives. He collaborated with his childhood friend, Kyle Krueger, to bring the concept to life. The pair spent months poring over vehicle safety regulations and meticulously designing over 500 components in CAD software to create their bespoke tube-frame chassis.
The two founders handle approximately 95% of the development in-house, relying on external specialists for component manufacturing. Industry veteran Joe Scarbo reviewed their chassis design, making only minor adjustments. The specialized 1.65-liter BMW motorcycle engines are being prepared by Ed Pink Racing Engines, known for its work with notable custom car builders.

Powertrain Prowess
The compact motorcycle engine is a standout feature, measuring just 22 inches wide and integrating its transmission. Shoreline Bespoke, in collaboration with Ed Pink Racing Engines, has boosted its output from an original 160 hp to a potent 250 hp, with a redline reaching an exhilarating 10,000 rpm. The combined weight of the engine and gearbox is a mere 225 pounds, significantly lighter than many single transmissions in competitor vehicles.
Spencer Beckman stated that the development of the engine is ongoing, and they are confident in the projected power output for production models. This specific output rivals that of the Cosworth V-12 found in the Gordon Murray Automotive T.33, highlighting the significant engineering effort involved.
“We have a fully engineered vehicle model and we designed the Laguna to be produced for the most discerning customers… Kyle leveraged his aerospace manufacturing experience to create an entire product lifecycle management system that is unique to SBV. Every vehicle component down to the last nut and bolt has a part number and exists in our database, ready to be implemented in a future production program,” Beckman explained.
Future Appearances and Vision
The Shoreline Bespoke LM Coupe is slated for an appearance at Monterey Car Week, with plans to return next year with a more production-ready prototype. The company’s meticulous approach, including a comprehensive product lifecycle management system developed by Krueger, aims to ensure a smooth path to manufacturing. This level of detail is impressive for a company founded by two young entrepreneurs who have demonstrated remarkable talent and dedication.
In fact, the global automotive industry produces roughly 80 million vehicles annually, underscoring the significant market Beckman and Krueger are aiming to penetrate with their niche offering (OICA, 2023).
Reflecting on their journey, Beckman shared, “We were two childhood friends who started playing with Hot Wheels together, and then we would build Lego cars together, and now we’re here.”
