From the Philippines to Canada: Medicine Hat McDonald’s manager Receives National recognition
Patric Platon, the manager of the McDonald’s restaurant on Dunmore Road in Medicine Hat, Alberta, has been awarded McDonald’s Canada’s Outstanding Manager of the Year award. Platon was recognized for his dedication, hard work, and commitment to both the company and its customers.
Platon, 52, expressed surprise and gratitude upon receiving the award, stating, “I didn’t expect it! I really enjoy what I do and this was like the icing on the cake.” He emphasized the importance of relationships within the restaurant, noting, “McDonald’s is definitely a people business and I really treasure the relationships that I’ve built here with management, crew and our guests.”
According to Jordy Gauf, McDonald’s market supervisor, Platon excels at building a positive and cohesive team, and has a significant influence on developing junior managers. “He works so well with his people and has a knack for developing a positive, cohesive team…He really encourages junior managers to step up and he’s a great teacher.”
Platon’s journey to this recognition began after moving to Canada. He initially held a work permit and later transitioned to becoming a permanent resident, returning to the Philippines from 2016 to 2019 to finalize his immigration status. In 2019, he successfully brought both of his sons to Canada after a three-year separation, relying on technology to stay connected during that time. He plans to apply for Canadian citizenship within the next year.
Beyond his managerial duties, Platon actively engages with the Medicine Hat community, highlighting his involvement with events like mchappy Day – which supports the local Ronald McDonald House Charities – and local initiatives like the Stampede and supporting local hockey teams. He appreciates the close-knit nature of the town and enjoys interacting with the people who frequent his restaurant.
McDonald’s Canada nominates restaurant managers nationwide for the award annually, recognizing their contributions. The company emphasizes its commitment to employee growth, providing opportunities to develop skills in areas like task prioritization, financial management, and operational oversight. Platon received his award at the bi-annual McDonald’s convention held in Vancouver in May. He views McDonald’s as a company that offers opportunities for career advancement, potentially serving as a stepping stone for others.
