Measles Case Imported from Mexico Detected in Bogotá: Health Protocols Activated

by Dr. Michael Lee – Health Editor

Bogotá health authorities confirmed the first imported case of measles in the Colombian capital on Friday, February 20, 2026, identifying the patient as an adult who recently traveled from Mexico. The detection prompted immediate activation of epidemiological protocols, according to a statement released by the Bogotá Secretary of Health.

The diagnosis was initially confirmed through PCR testing of swab and urine samples taken on February 15, with results obtained on February 19, according to officials. Samples have been sent to the National Institute of Health of Colombia for official confirmation and notification. The Bogotá Distrital Public Health Laboratory, which possesses molecular diagnostic capabilities for measles, played a key role in the initial identification.

“The study of this imported case demonstrates that Bogotá’s surveillance system is functioning,” stated Gerson Bermont, the Bogotá Secretary of Health. “We detected it promptly, isolated the patient immediately, and activated the epidemiological fence.” Authorities emphasized that, as of Friday, there was no evidence of local transmission of the virus.

The case was identified within the framework of strengthened epidemiological surveillance at international points of entry, including El Dorado International Airport and land terminals. Increased controls were implemented in response to rising measles cases in North America, officials stated. Immediate measures include home isolation for the patient, ongoing clinical monitoring, field epidemiological investigation, contact tracing, active community search, and verification of vaccination coverage.

Bogotá is currently the only territorial entity in Colombia with the capacity to directly confirm measles cases through molecular diagnostics, accelerating the public health response, according to the city government. The Secretary of Health clarified that the confirmation of an imported case does not indicate autochthonous transmission.
