The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) recorded a weak ash explosion at the summit crater of Mayon Volcano in Albay on Thursday morning. The event, occurring at approximately 9 a.m., sent a grayish ash plume 500 meters into the sky. The debris drifted toward the east-northeast, according to agency reports.

Strict Exclusion Zones Remain in Effect

PHIVOLCS maintains Alert Level 2 over the volcano, signaling a period of decreased unrest. Despite this classification, the agency reiterated that the six-kilometer radius Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) remains strictly off-limits to the public. The prohibition extends to all aircraft; authorities are advising against flying near the volcano due to the risk of sudden, steam-driven or phreatic eruptions.

Persistent Hazards and Environmental Risks

The agency identified several ongoing hazards associated with the current state of the volcano. These include potential rockfalls, landslides, and lahars, particularly during periods of heavy or prolonged rainfall.
