Mattel Releases First-Ever Whitney Houston Barbie Signature Doll
On August 9, Mattel commemorated what would have been Whitney Houston’s 63rd birthday by releasing the first-ever Whitney Houston Barbie Signature Doll. Unveiled at the Fifth Legacy of Love Gala in Atlanta, the $60 collectible honors the late music icon’s lasting cultural impact, recreating her famous 1987 style from the “I Wanna Dance with Somebody” music video.
According to PEOPLE and Billboard, the collectible figure was created in close collaboration with Pat Houston, who serves as the estate executor, sister-in-law to the late singer, and president of the Whitney E. Pat Houston noted that conversations about a Mattel doll began roughly 20 years ago, though initial plans for a concept inspired by the 1992 film The Bodyguard ultimately did not materialize.
The finalized $60 doll captures the vibrant aesthetic of the 1987 “I Wanna Dance with Somebody” global smash. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Signature Series piece features a bright purple tank dress, iridescent heels, colorful beaded drop earrings, signature 1980s voluminous hair, and vivid purple and gold eye makeup. It also comes equipped with a miniature black microphone and mic stand inside a window pane display box.
The doll made its public debut on August 8 during the Fifth Legacy of Love Gala at The Whitley Hotel in Atlanta. The evening also paid tribute to music industry legend Clive Davis, who served as honorary chair of the foundation prior to his passing in June.
Philanthropy, Distribution, and the Collector Market
Beyond the retail launch at Target stores, Amazon, Walmart, and Mattel Creations, the project carries a distinct philanthropic dimension. Additionally, Target introduced a Tiny Vinyl release pairing “I Wanna Dance with Somebody (Who Loves Me)” with “So Emotional.”
Whitney Houston joins a selective roster of musical greats previously honored in the Barbie Signature Series, which includes Miley Cyrus, Aaliyah, Stevie Nicks, Gloria Estefan, Tina Turner, Diana Ross, and Elton John.
