Masood Azhar Health Crisis: Reports of Deteriorating Condition
Islamabad – Reports emerged on Friday indicating that Maulana Masood Azhar, the head of Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM), is facing serious health challenges. The assessment follows the release of a 21-minute Eid message from Azhar, in which he is heard speaking with difficulty and frequently coughing, according to sources.
Pakistani authorities have yet to release any official statement regarding Azhar’s condition. Intelligence sources, however, suggest his health is deteriorating and that he is seeking medical attention. Some analysts speculate that the audio message may be a strategic move by Azhar to create a narrative of vulnerability amidst ongoing counterterrorism pressure.
The reported health crisis raises questions about the future leadership of JeM. Sources indicate that if Azhar’s condition worsens, his younger brother, Abdul Rauf Asghar, is likely to assume control of the organization. Asghar has long been considered a key figure within JeM and a potential successor.
In May 2025, Azhar acknowledged the deaths of ten family members and four associates in an Indian missile strike targeting a JeM headquarters in Bahawalpur, Pakistan. The attack, which targeted Jamia Masjid Subhan Allah, claimed the lives of his elder sister, her husband, a nephew, his wife, another niece, and five children from his extended family, as well as close associates.
The current silence from Pakistani authorities regarding Azhar’s health is notable, particularly given the group’s history and regional implications. The potential for a leadership transition within JeM adds another layer of complexity to the security landscape in the region.
