Mashaba Warns of Escalating Tensions in Tshwane Coalition Ahead of Elections

August 17, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

Action South Africa leader Herman Mashaba has declared that the coalition governing the City of Tshwane is under significant strain as the parties involved prepare for a critical vote to elect a new mayor. Mashaba stated that the political environment within the coalition has become increasingly volatile, warning that the “gloves are off” as the parties navigate deep-seated disagreements.

### Strained Relations in the Tshwane Coalition
The instability follows the recent removal of Cilliers Brink as the mayor of Tshwane through a motion of no confidence. The motion was supported by the African National Congress (ANC) and ActionSA, despite ActionSA previously being part of the multi-party coalition that brought Brink to power.

Mashaba indicated that the breakdown in relations is rooted in a lack of trust and fundamental differences regarding the governance of the capital city. According to the ActionSA leader, the parties are currently “nervous about what is going to happen” as they approach the upcoming council meeting scheduled to select a successor. The collapse of the existing coalition structure has left the city’s leadership in a state of flux, with various political factions maneuvering to secure enough support to form a new executive.

### Political Maneuvering for the Mayoral Seat
The vacancy in the mayor’s office has triggered intense lobbying between the major political players, including the Democratic Alliance (DA), the ANC, and ActionSA. While the DA has signaled its intent to reclaim the mayorship, the shifting alliances within the council mean that no single party holds an outright majority.

Mashaba emphasized that ActionSA’s current position is dictated by the need to ensure service delivery, though he acknowledged that the ongoing friction has made stable governance difficult to maintain. The party has maintained that its withdrawal of support for the previous administration was a response to internal coalition pressures that the party felt were no longer sustainable.

### Council Meeting and Governance Deadlines
The City of Tshwane council is expected to convene to address the mayoral vacancy, a session that will serve as a test for the new power dynamics in the chamber. The outcome of this vote will determine the path forward for the municipality, which has faced mounting financial and service delivery challenges.

As of the latest reports from party leadership, no formal agreement has been reached between the competing blocs. The council remains in a period of transition while parties finalize their strategies for the pending election. The municipal proceedings are set to continue under the current legislative requirements, with the next session of the council expected to formalize the nomination process for the mayoral position.
