Marvel’s Wolverine Runs at 60 FPS with Ray Tracing on Base PS5

August 14, 2026 Rachel Kim – Technology Editor Technology

Marvel’s Wolverine will run at 60 frames per second with ray tracing enabled by default on the standard PlayStation 5, according to Insomniac Games. Scheduled for release on September 15, 2026, exclusively for PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 5 Pro, the title breaks from the studio’s traditional development trajectory by prioritizing high frame rates and advanced lighting from the outset.

Development Approach for Standard PlayStation 5 Hardware

According to senior project director Jess Reiner-Reed in an interview with IGN, the team established the 60 frames per second performance target during the earliest stages of production rather than tacking it on near completion. Mike Fitzgerald added that previous projects typically relied on separate fidelity and performance modes, with ray tracing integrated into performance settings only late in the cycle or post-launch, as seen in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales. For Marvel’s Wolverine, the studio built the entire project around running at 60 frames per second with ray tracing active on base hardware as the primary presentation mode.

Combat Mechanics and Environmental Destruction Tech

The high frame rate supports fast-paced combat encounters where Logan moves fluidly between enemies, executing blocks, counter-attacks, combos, and special moves that build a Fury meter, as observed in hands-on sessions provided by PlayStation. To match the character’s aggressive nature, Insomniac Games invested heavily in interactive, destructible environments. Moving away from the dense urban layouts of the Spider-Man series, the game features natural landscapes in Canada alongside the fictional city of Madripoor, incorporating dynamic vegetation that reacts physically to wind and character movement. Market stalls, tables, and objects shatter and scatter during fights to ensure environments reflect the violence of the encounters.
