Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio to Collaborate Again on Adaptation of “What Happens at Night“
LOS ANGELES, CA - Martin Scorsese will once again direct Leonardo DiCaprio in a new film, What Happens at Night, an adaptation of the play by Sarah Deane Marber. The project brings together a powerhouse team of award-winning talent, signaling a perhaps significant addition to both filmmakers’ celebrated bodies of work.
This collaboration marks the seventh feature film pairing for Scorsese and DiCaprio, a partnership widely considered one of the moast fruitful in modern cinema. Thier previous projects-Gangs of New York, The Aviator, The Departed, Shutter Island, The Wolf of Wall Street, and killers of the Flower Moon-have garnered critical acclaim and commercial success, solidifying their status as leading figures in the industry. What Happens at Night promises to continue this trend, offering a compelling narrative and the dynamic synergy audiences have come to expect from the duo.
The upcoming film will also star Jennifer Lawrence, marking her first on-screen collaboration with Scorsese. Scorsese recently lauded lawrence’s talent, praising her casting in the forthcoming Die, My Love, a film centered on a woman’s experience with postpartum psychosis. Lawrence and DiCaprio previously co-starred in the 2021 satire Don’t Look up.
Marber, the playwright behind What Happens at Night, brings her own accolades to the project, having won a Tony Award for best Direction of a Play for Leopoldstadt. The source material’s exploration of outlook and truth echoes themes present in Scorsese and DiCaprio’s 2010 film,Shutter Island, which similarly featured an unreliable narrator and a shocking twist.
Scorsese has consistently praised DiCaprio’s acting prowess, recently describing him as “one of the greatest actors” ever. He specifically highlighted DiCaprio’s performance in Killers of the Flower Moon, stating, “One take, so I see him digging deeper into the corners of a human experience that many of us really can’t even bear to even acknowledge the weakness and the delusions of this guy in the film…You hate him, but you tend to also love him…all the contradictions of what it is indeed to be human.”
Beyond What Happens at Night, Scorsese and DiCaprio are currently developing The Devil in the White City, a period serial killer film under 20th Century Studios. A release date for What Happens at Night has not yet been announced. Killers of the Flower Moon is currently available for streaming on Apple TV+.
