Marseille Strip Pierre-Emile Højbjerg of Captaincy After Rejected Newcastle Move

August 15, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

The internal disciplinary action highlights deep financial pressures at the Orange Velodrome as owner Frank McCourt attempts to reduce the club’s wage bill.

Management Friction and the Højbjerg Captaincy Demotion

The fallout from Højbjerg’s decision to reject a move to the English Premier League has triggered a swift leadership change at Marseille. According to Yahoo Sports Australia, club officials grew fuming after the 31-year-old midfielder blocked a deal that would have significantly aided the French club’s financial situation. Despite Marseille and Newcastle reaching a total agreement for the transfer, Højbjerg opted to remain in the south of France.

Evidence of the demotion surfaced during a Friday friendly fixture against Atletico Madrid. While Genesio included the veteran midfielder in the starting line-up, the captain’s armband was handed instead to United States international Timothy Weah. Speaking after the match, Genesio offered a blunt assessment of the situation. “I’ll be completely frank, it’s a decision by the management that I do not share,” Genesio stated, according to Yahoo Sports Australia.

Financial Pressures and Owner Response at Marseille

Marseille owner Frank McCourt remains irritated by the player’s conduct. The club has faced immense pressure to reduce its substantial wage bill during the summer transfer window due to ongoing financial difficulties. The guaranteed windfall from Newcastle would have provided much-needed economic relief.

Højbjerg originally joined Marseille on loan from Tottenham Hotspur during the 2024-25 season. That agreement included a mandatory purchase clause worth £17 million, which was officially triggered earlier this year. However, the club’s desire to cash in on him just months later underscores the volatile nature of their current economic state.

By blocking the exit, Højbjerg placed himself in a delicate position where his loyalty to the team is viewed as an obstruction to long-term sustainability and recruitment plans.

Newcastle United’s Search for Reinforcements

For Newcastle United, the rejection represents another setback in a turbulent summer at St. James’ Park. The Magpies had identified Højbjerg as an experienced organizer to anchor the midfield for new head coach Matthias Jaissle. The club must now look elsewhere for reinforcements following a massive drain of talent during the window.

Prior to this, Newcastle permitted high-profile departures involving former captain Bruno Guimaraes to Arsenal, standout winger Anthony Gordon to Barcelona, and Sandro Tonali to Tottenham. These recruitment struggles follow the departure of Eddie Howe, who stepped down on July 31 after ending the club’s trophy drought and guiding them to the Champions League.

Uncertain Future and Alternative Suitors

Despite internal disciplinary measures, Højbjerg remains a sought-after commodity in the final weeks of the European transfer window. Even though he has voiced a preference to remain at Marseille, tensions in his relationship with the club’s leadership might compel a departure before the window closes.

AC Milan is reportedly keeping a close watch on the situation, potentially providing the Danish international with an alternative route out of France if his position at Marseille becomes untenable. As the transfer window draws to a close, the resolution of this standoff will depend on whether an outside club meets valuation requirements or if reconciliation is reached under mounting administrative pressure.
