Married At First Sight’s Mel Schilling Dies Aged 54 After Cancer Battle
Mel Schilling, the relationship expert known for her role on the reality television show Married at First Sight, has died at the age of 54, her family announced Tuesday.
Schilling passed away “surrounded by love,” according to a statement posted on her Instagram account. The news comes after she publicly shared earlier in March that her cancer had spread to the left side of her brain and that doctors had determined there were no further treatment options available.
“To most of you, she was Mel Schilling — matriarch of MAFS and queen of reality TV,” the family statement read. “To Maddie and me, she was our wee Melsie: an incredible mum, role model, and soulmate.”
Her husband, Gareth Brisbane, recounted in the statement that in her final moments, despite the impact of the disease, Schilling managed to communicate a message to him and their daughter, Maddie. “When I thought cancer had taken away her ability to speak, she ushered me closer and whispered a message for Maddie and me that will sustain me for the rest of my life,” Brisbane wrote. “Even then, her only thought was for Maddie and me.”
Schilling was initially diagnosed with colon cancer in December 2023, after a tumor was discovered during a scan. She underwent 16 rounds of chemotherapy, continuing to film Married at First Sight throughout her treatment, and later participated in a clinical trial. Still, the cancer ultimately metastasized, spreading to her brain by December 2025.
The television personality began her involvement with Married at First Sight in Australia in 2016, later expanding her role to the UK version of the show. She stepped down from the Australian series earlier this year to focus on her health and family.
Channel 4, the UK broadcaster of Married at First Sight, paid tribute to Schilling, describing her as someone who “radiated joy, warmth and optimism.” In a statement, the channel acknowledged Schilling’s significant contribution to the show’s success, highlighting her advocacy for women and her commitment to fostering healthy relationships. “We’re privileged to be the channel that is home to Mel’s work, which was at the heart of Married At First Sight’s phenomenal success, both in the UK and Australia,” the statement read.
CPL Productions, the production company behind the UK version of the show, also expressed its sadness at Schilling’s passing. “All at CPL were deeply saddened to hear of the death of our beloved friend and colleague, Mel Schilling,” the company said in a statement. “Mel went far beyond being just a fantastic on-screen presenter; she was a friend to CPL, and to many of us who worked with her.”
