Greene Calls for Prosecution of Special counsel Smith Following Potential trump Victory
WASHINGTON – Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) has publicly called for the prosecution of Special Counsel Jack Smith should Donald Trump win the upcoming presidential election.GreeneS remarks, revealed in a recently resurfaced clip, signal a potential escalation of attacks on the independence of the justice Department if Trump returns to office.
Smith, appointed in 2022 as an independent special counsel, is currently leading investigations into both Trump’s alleged election interference scheme and his handling of classified documents. Greene’s suggestion that Smith’s appointment was unlawful mirrors arguments previously made-and rejected by multiple judges-in an attempt to dismiss the classified documents case. Judge Aileen Cannon, appointed by Trump, did utilize this argument to toss the case, while D.C. Judge Tanya Chutkan and others have upheld Smith’s authority.
The call for Smith’s prosecution comes as Trump reportedly plans to “weaponize” the Department of Justice in a second term, potentially through mass firings of career officials and the installation of loyalists. According to a New York Times report, Trump previously directed the Justice department to investigate critics and seize reporters’ phones during his first presidency. greene also targeted U.S. Attorney Matthew Graves, who prosecuted participants in the January 6th riots, filing articles of impeachment against him last year.
These statements raise concerns about the future of prosecutorial independence and the potential for politically motivated investigations under a second Trump administration. Plans outlined in Project 2025 suggest Trump would seek an unprecedentedly active role in the Department of Justice, staffing it with individuals more inclined to pursue investigations against political opponents.
