Nintendo has released game update 1.5.0 for Mario Kart World, sparking renewed speculation about the potential for downloadable content (DLC) for the racing title.
The update, which went live on January 21, 2026, follows a previous update to version 1.4.1 and a December 2nd patch, according to a listing of software updates for the game. While patch notes have been added for the latest version, Nintendo has yet to formally announce any plans for additional content beyond these software improvements.
Mario Kart World, released worldwide for the Nintendo Switch 2 on June 5, 2025, has been available for approximately six months without any major content additions. Despite this, industry observers and fans alike anticipate that Nintendo will eventually expand the game’s offerings, mirroring the post-launch support provided for previous Mario Kart titles.
The precedent for DLC within the Mario Kart franchise is strong. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, released on both the Wii U and Switch, became one of the best-selling games of all time, exceeding 76 million copies sold. The previous three Mario Kart games as well received content released after their initial launch, with the original Mario Kart 8 receiving three content packs within its first year.
Recent online discussion has focused on the possibility of Donkey Kong-themed DLC, potentially tied to the release of Donkey Kong Bananza on the Nintendo Switch 2. Dataminers reportedly discovered an animation of King K. Rool, a recurring villain from the Donkey Kong series, within the Nintendo Today news app, dated December 15. While King K. Rool has appeared in Super Smash Bros., he has never been a playable character in a Mario Kart game.
Nintendo has not commented on the datamined animation or the possibility of DLC. The company has also not announced any plans for future content, but analysts suggest that extending the life cycle of its launch title for the Switch 2 is a likely strategy.
