Stuttgart, Germany – Italian handball player Marco Mengon will join TVB Stuttgart with immediate effect, signing a contract that will preserve him with the club through 2029. The transfer from 2. Handball Bundesliga side 1. VfL Potsdam marks a significant move for the 26-year-old, who was also captain of his former team.

Mengon expressed his enthusiasm for the move, stating, “The philosophy of handball here fits my style of play perfectly. For me It’s something special to now play in the strongest league in the world and to compete at the highest level week after week.”

The decision to allow Mengon to leave was not easy for Potsdam, according to Head of Sports Bob Hanning. “Marco’s wishes and the financial offer made by Stuttgart have not made any other decision possible. We wish him all the best on his journey,” Hanning said in a statement released by the club.

TVB Stuttgart’s Managing Director Jürgen Schweikardt highlighted the need for reinforcement following recent departures. “After the departures of Achilleas Toskas, Gianfranco Pribetić and Lukas Laube, our squad has been thinned out and so far there has only been one new addition, Max Heydecke from the TVB Talent Hub. That’s why it was critical for us to add more specifically. Marco gives us additional options thanks to his variability and fits exceptionally well into our game system with his strengths,” Schweikardt explained.

The transfer reunites Mengon with his twin brother, Simone Mengon, who has played for TVB Stuttgart since the summer of 2025. Mengon arrived in Potsdam at the beginning of the current season after playing for Sélestat Alsace Handball in the French second division. Prior to that, he developed his skills in France, beginning with Pallamano Pressano in Italy in 2017, then progressing through the youth system of Montpellier Handball, and later playing for Cesson Rennes Métropole HB and Sarrebourg Moselle-Sud Handball on loan.

During his time with Potsdam, Mengon quickly established himself as a key player, earning the captaincy and demonstrating both scoring ability and playmaking skills. He scored 84 goals in 18 competitive matches for Potsdam this season. The recent European Handball Championship also saw Mengon attract attention from several clubs, ultimately leading to the offer from Stuttgart.

1. VfL Potsdam stated that Mengon felt at home with the club during his six months there, but ultimately decided to pursue the next step in his career. The club has fulfilled his wish to join the 1st Handball Bundesliga.
