Manchester United Goalkeeper André Onana Sought Improved Contract, Faced Bench Time Under Amorim

MANCHESTER, UK – Manchester United goalkeeper André Onana requested an improved contract upon joining the club, a move that reportedly caused friction with manager Rúben Amorim and led to a period where he was sidelined, according to The Athletic. The Cameroonian international sought the adjustment after his initial salary was reduced by 25 percent due to Manchester United’s absence from the Champions League.

Onana’s contract discussions did not resonate well with Amorim, who initially favored Altay Bayindir in Premier League matches. Despite this,Manchester United resisted selling Onana, turning down interest from clubs like AS Monaco, who were reportedly deterred by the club’s £30 million asking price. Following two matches on the bench, onana’s representatives inquired about the possibility of finding him a new club, though were informed he remained in Amorim’s plans.

United ultimately signed Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp late in the transfer window, despite Amorim’s preference for Emiliano Martínez, who had a pre-existing rapport with both Amorim and United defender Lisandro Martínez. Martínez and Amorim advocated for the Argentinian goalkeeper, but he was deemed “too expensive.” Recent reports indicate Manchester United are now open to a potential transfer for Onana to Saudi Arabia.
