MAN trucks Face Scrutiny After Surge in Fires on German Motorways
Göttingen/Kassel – A recent inquiry by german broadcaster NDR’s consumer program Markt has revealed a concerning trend: a disproportionately high number of fires involving MAN trucks, specifically the TGX and TGS models manufactured between 2016 and 2019, on German highways. The issue is particularly acute on the A7 motorway between Göttingen and the Kirchheimer Dreieck (Kasseler Berge).
Data indicates that between January 2023 and mid-August 2025, a total of 33 truck fires were recorded on this stretch of road. Of those,27 involved MAN vehicles, according to the Hessische Ministry of the Interior. The risk is amplified as these trucks are frequently used to transport tankers and hazardous materials, posing a threat to drivers, emergency responders, and other traffic.
In response to the escalating situation, the German Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA) deemed the issue a “serious risk” and initiated a recall in 2024. The recall involves replacing damaged oil filter components and shortening maintenance intervals for over 37,000 vehicles globally, including approximately 12,700 in Germany. The action extends beyond trucks, encompassing various MAN bus models as well. MAN reports that over 90% of affected vehicles have now undergone the necessary adjustments.
Despite the recall efforts, incidents continue to occur. Transport companies are reporting substantial financial losses, drivers describe facing life-threatening scenarios, and fire brigades detail the challenges and dangers of responding to these highway blazes.
MAN acknowledges the incidents but maintains they represent rare occurrences and suggests potential maintenance issues could contribute to the fires. The company states that fire damage across its entire fleet remains “very rare” and emphasizes its ongoing commitment to risk mitigation thru extensive and effective measures.
The KBA is currently evaluating the adequacy of the implemented measures to ensure the safety of drivers and all road users.
Currently, it remains unknown whether ther has been a corresponding increase in MAN truck fires on Dutch motorways.
