A man in his 70s was escorted home by Essex Police after inadvertently driving a mobility scooter onto the M11 motorway near Harlow on Friday afternoon.
Police were alerted to the situation at approximately 12:35 GMT when multiple drivers reported seeing the scooter travelling along the hard shoulder. Officers responded by briefly closing one lane to ensure the safety of both the driver and other motorists, according to a statement released by Essex Police.
The driver, whose identity has not been released, had apparently turned onto the motorway accidentally. Officers secured the man and his scooter, transporting both back to his residence. A photograph shared by the police depicted the mobility scooter equipped with a blue and green rain cover.
“Not a typical stop for our roads policing unit, but a great reminder to only use suitable vehicles on our major roads,” a police spokesperson stated. The force also acknowledged the numerous calls received from concerned drivers who reported the incident, thanking them for their vigilance.
The incident occurred on February 27th, according to reports, and prompted a temporary lane closure on the M11. Authorities have not disclosed whether any enforcement action was taken against the driver.
