A man was fatally shot in Louisville’s California neighborhood Thursday night, February 12, according to the Louisville Metro Police Department. The victim has been identified as Michael A. Jackson, 32, by the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office.
Police responded to a report of a shooting in the 2800 block of West Calumet Street just before 10:30 p.m. Arriving officers found Jackson suffering from gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The shooting occurred as the Louisville Metro Police Department (LMPD) is increasing its focus on the California neighborhood as part of its 2026 crime reduction plan. LMPD announced Tuesday that the area would be added to its list of five target areas for intensified policing efforts, a strategy known as Sustained Focus Improvement (SFI). These areas receive additional technology, investigative resources, and police presence.
Chief Paul Humphrey stated that the department is shifting its focus to the California neighborhood after seeing positive results in other SFI areas. According to LMPD data released in December 2025, violent crime in the initial five SFI areas decreased by 20 percent. The department reported a 21 percent decrease in homicides citywide in 2025, with 111 homicides recorded compared to 141 in 2024. Non-fatal shootings also saw a 27 percent decline during the same period.
“We are getting lots of guns and lots of violent people off the street and that’s an impact,” Chief Humphrey said in a recent statement. “That keeps criminals looking over their shoulder because they never recognize when an officer is gonna pop up and interrupt their criminal activity.”
The LMPD is currently investigating two separate police shootings that occurred within hours of each other last week, one on West Chestnut Street and another on Bardstown Road. Chief Humphrey has declined to comment extensively on the specifics of those cases, but indicated that preliminary reviews suggest officers acted appropriately.
As of Friday, February 13, the investigation into Jackson’s death remains ongoing. LMPD has not released information regarding potential suspects or motives. The department has not announced a timeline for the release of any further information.
