Man City Beat Newcastle: Title Race Heats Up | Premier League Updates

February 22, 2026 Alex Carter - Sports Editor Sport

Manchester City tightened their grip on the Premier League title race with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Newcastle United at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday, fueled by a brace from midfielder Nico O’Reilly.

O’Reilly opened the scoring in the 14th minute, powerfully finishing after a clever layoff from Omar Marmoush following initial work by Erling Haaland. Newcastle responded swiftly, with Lewis Hall leveling the score in the 22nd minute, though the goal included a deflection off City defender Rayan Ait-Nouri.

City’s response was immediate. O’Reilly restored the lead just five minutes later, heading home a cross from Haaland after a driving run and assist from Antoine Semenyo. The goal marked O’Reilly’s second of the match and continued a remarkable run of form for the versatile player, who has been reinvented as a midfielder after previously featuring at left-back.

The win moves Manchester City within two points of league leaders Arsenal, who play Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday. City now have the same number of games played as Arsenal and hold a game in hand, with a crucial encounter between the two sides scheduled for April. According to reports, eleven wins from their remaining matches would guarantee Pep Guardiola’s side a seventh Premier League title.

Despite the victory, Guardiola’s side weren’t entirely convincing, and the manager reportedly grew frustrated with their inability to close out the game more comfortably. City’s dominance was challenged by a resilient Newcastle side, who were returning from a demanding 5,000-mile round trip to Azerbaijan for a Champions League play-off match against Qarabag.

Newcastle’s efforts to secure a point were thwarted by a late save from City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, denying Harvey Barnes in the dying seconds. The match was the fourth meeting between the two sides this season, with another clash scheduled in the FA Cup next month.

Elsewhere in the Premier League, Burnley secured a 1-1 draw at Chelsea, denting the Blues’ Champions League qualification hopes. Joao Pedro had given Chelsea the lead, but Wesley Fofana’s late red card allowed Burnley to capitalize, with Zian Flemming scoring a 93rd-minute equalizer. Chelsea manager Liam Rosenior criticized his team’s defending of set-pieces, stating that players had failed to fulfill their assigned duties.

Aston Villa and Leeds United played to a 1-1 draw, with Tammy Abraham scoring a late goal to salvage a point for Villa. Anton Stach had given Leeds the lead with a spectacular long-range free-kick. Brighton & Hove Albion defeated Brentford 2-0, with James Milner setting a modern Premier League record for appearances, reaching 654 games. Milner, aged 40, scored the opening goal, with Danny Welbeck adding a second. West Ham United and Bournemouth played out a goalless draw.
