Mexico City,Mexico – Colombian superstar Maluma unexpectedly stopped his concert at the Palacio de los Deportes in Mexico City on Saturday night to address a member of the audience who had brought her one-year-old child. The singer directly voiced his concerns about the potential harm high sound levels could inflict on the infant, sparking a debate about concert safety for young children.
“Do you think it’s a good idea to bring a one-year-old baby to a concert where the sound is so loud? That baby doesn’t even know what he’s doing here,” Maluma stated from the stage, according to videos circulating on social media. “Next time, protect yoru ears.” He further emphasized the mother was holding the child “as if it were a toy,” adding it was “an act of irresponsibility.”
The incident, captured by multiple concertgoers, quickly went viral across platforms like TikTok and X (formerly Twitter),generating a wide range of reactions. Audiences debated the singer’s approach, with some praising his concern for the child’s well-being and others criticizing his public reprimand of the mother.
Maluma, whose real name is Juan luis Londoño Arias, explained his concern stemmed from his own experience as a new father. He referenced his daughter, Paris Londoño, born in Medellín, Colombia, in March 2023. “I say this with all due respect,as I am a dad. For next time, be a little more aware,” he added.
‘Pretty Dirty World Tour’ Continues in Mexico
Maluma is currently in the midst of the Mexican leg of his ‘Pretty dirty World Tour,’ with three sold-out concerts in Mexico City. The tour began in april 2023 and is scheduled to continue throughout Latin America and the United States in 2024.
During his performances, Maluma was joined by fellow Colombian artist Pipe bueno for a rendition of “El Rey,” a tribute to traditional Mexican music. Bueno, who resides in Mexico, surprised the audience with the collaborative performance.
Following Saturday’s show, Maluma was seen interacting with fans and singing alongside a mariachi band, performing classic Mexican songs including Vicente Fernández’s “Aquí Entre Nosotros.”
The Risks of Loud Noise Exposure for Infants
Experts warn that infants are notably vulnerable to noise-induced hearing loss. The american Academy of Pediatrics recommends limiting a baby’s exposure to sounds above 85 decibels, a level commonly reached at concerts. Prolonged exposure can cause permanent damage to a child’s developing auditory system. Concert sound levels often exceed 100 decibels.
This incident highlights the ongoing discussion about parental responsibility and the safety of bringing young children to loud events. While there are no specific laws prohibiting infants at concerts in Mexico City, many venues recommend against it and offer ear protection for older children.
