ASEAN Unity Vowed Amid Global Fragmentation

Malaysian PM Stresses Regional Cohesion at Jakarta Summit

JAKARTA – The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and Malaysia have jointly reaffirmed their dedication to unity and multilateralism, recognizing these as crucial pillars for regional stability and advancement. This commitment was highlighted during Malaysian Prime Minister **Anwar Ibrahim**’s policy speech at the ASEAN Secretariat.

Anchor of Stability

Prime Minister **Anwar Ibrahim** declared that ASEAN’s commitment to regionalism and multilateralism remains the fundamental basis for the bloc’s collective stability and progress. He emphasized the critical need for ASEAN to champion established rules, even as other global actors may opt for disengagement.

Addressing an audience of diplomats, ASEAN officials, and representatives from partner nations, **Anwar Ibrahim** called for ASEAN to be a proactive force for change. He asserted that the bloc must possess the capability to influence global rules and norms, ensuring it remains an open, inclusive entity grounded in justice.

Confronting Global Division

The Prime Minister warned that the current global order is experiencing unprecedented fragmentation. He pointed to escalating rivalries between major powers, intense geo-economic competition, and the erosion of multilateralism. **Anwar Ibrahim** urged ASEAN to confront these realities with a clear purpose and a defined vision.

In this challenging environment, **Anwar Ibrahim** advocated for a more cohesive and resilient ASEAN. Such a bloc, he stated, would be better positioned to maintain constructive engagement with international partners while safeguarding its core principles of centrality, unity, and autonomy.

“I have consistently underscored that ASEAN’s centrality, unity and autonomy should remain the compass in our collective journey ahead. In a fragmented world, our centrality and unity matter more than ever.”

Mediation Efforts Highlighted

**Anwar Ibrahim**’s address also underscored ASEAN’s active role in conflict mediation. He referenced Malaysia’s recent success in facilitating dialogue between Cambodia and Thailand, following an escalation of border tensions between the two nations.

This diplomatic effort, he noted, reinforced the principle that peace is most effectively achieved through dialogue, mutual respect, and a shared commitment to stability. The diplomatic engagement occurred on the Monday prior to his speech.

Milestone Visit

ASEAN Secretary-General **Kao Kim Hourn** welcomed **Anwar Ibrahim**’s visit, characterizing it as a “truly significant milestone” during Malaysia’s current tenure as ASEAN Chair. He highlighted the importance of multilateral cooperation and principled diplomacy for regional peace and prosperity.

**Kao Kim Hourn** noted that Malaysia’s leadership in 2025 has already yielded substantial achievements, including key economic initiatives and the upcoming admission of Timor-Leste as ASEAN’s eleventh member state. The bloc’s unity is increasingly vital as it navigates a period of global change.

The urgency for ASEAN unity has never been greater, **Kao Kim Hourn** stated. The bloc’s capacity to thrive depends on its collective resolve. Globally, trade facilitation agreements have aimed to boost economic growth, with the World Trade Organization noting that expedited customs procedures could save businesses an estimated $1.4 trillion annually (WTO 2023).
