Majorca Imposes strict Water Restrictions as Drought Fears Escalate
Soller, Majorca – Popular tourist destination Soller in Majorca has implemented a series of stringent water conservation measures amid growing concerns over a severe drought. the restrictions impact both residents and the vital tourism sector, including hotels, holiday rentals, bars, restaurants, and cafeterias, as officials warn of a perhaps “critical moment” if action isn’t taken.
The local council has prohibited the filling of swimming pools and is urging the public too limit shower times. Public showers at beaches, sports facilities, and clubs have been suspended. Street and square cleaning is now strictly limited to situations posing health or safety risks.
Beyond public use, hotels and other tourism businesses are banned from irrigating gardens and washing vehicles or boats. The council is also mandating that washing machines and dishwashers are only operated when fully loaded. Cleaning of terraces and facades is similarly restricted to essential health and safety concerns.
“If we do not take measures soon, we will reach a critical moment, which is why it is important to start acting to preserve our water resources and guarantee that the entire population has water without having to take more restrictive measures,” a council statement read.
The measures, which are “in force until further notice,” were implemented after weeks of consultation with the hotel and business sectors to determine the best approach to water conservation. The council emphasized the urgency, noting that rain is “non-existent in the short term.”
“Every gesture counts: if we all assume our share of responsibility and act conscientiously, we will avoid tougher restrictions in the immediate future…” the council added, appealing for widespread cooperation.
Soller is currently operating under a drought warning, and officials are hoping these measures will prevent the situation from worsening.
