Macau’s annual Dragon Boat Races are scheduled to take place this year, continuing a tradition of festivals that punctuate the calendar in the special administrative region. The races, alongside events like the Lunar New Year Flower Parade and the Macau International Fireworks Display, demonstrate the region’s blend of Chinese tradition and international appeal.
The Macau Government Tourism Office (MGTO) actively promotes a diverse range of festivities throughout the year. These include celebrations rooted in Chinese culture, such as the Lunar New Year, the Birthday of the Earth God (土地誕 – Tudigong), and the Dragon Boat Festival (端午節 – Duanwu Jie). Alongside these, Macau also observes Western holidays like Easter, the Feast of Saint John the Baptist, and Christmas. The MGTO highlights these events as key components of Macau’s tourism offerings.
The Lunar New Year celebrations are particularly significant, marked by lion and dragon dances, temple visits for blessings, and vibrant flower markets. The festivities often extend for the first three days of the lunar calendar. The Dragon Boat Festival, traditionally held on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month, features the iconic boat races and the consumption of zongzi, glutinous rice dumplings.
Macau also hosts several large-scale international events. The Macau International Fireworks Display, held between September and October, attracts teams from around the world to compete in spectacular pyrotechnic displays, often synchronized with music. The event is free to the public, with viewing areas along Nam Van Lake and near the Macau Tower. The Macau Grand Prix, a major motorsport event, also draws international attention.
Beyond these prominent events, Macau observes a number of public holidays, including Labour Day on May 1st, the Buddha’s Birthday, and the Mid-Autumn Festival. The region also commemorates dates with Portuguese historical significance, such as the Day of Camões, and local celebrations like the Feast of Saint John, the patron saint of Macau. The government also recognizes dates like the establishment of the Macau Special Administrative Region on December 20th.
The 14th Macau International Tourism (Industry) Expo is also scheduled to take place this year, according to the MGTO. The expo is intended to further promote Macau as a destination and showcase its tourism industry.
