Lyon High Schools Strike Over Working Conditions and Class Sizes

September 2, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

The academic term opened with severe labor friction across the eastern districts of Lyon. Educational personnel across institutions in Villeurbanne, Vaulx-en-Velin, and Vénissieux walked off the job or organized picket lines to demand urgent structural interventions from the regional education authority. According to Lyon Capitale, the movement stems from unresolved grievances initially raised during widespread mobilizations in the spring of 2026.

Classroom Caps and Priority Status Demands at Brossolette and Faÿs

At the Pierre-Brossolette high school in Villeurbanne, staff initiated a majority strike on the very first day of classes, September 1, 2026. Protesting personnel gathered for a demonstration outside the regional rectorate at 1:00 PM that same day. The industrial action is scheduled to expand significantly later in the week, with secondary walkouts planned at the Frédérique-Faÿs high school in Villeurbanne, the Robert-Doisneau high school in Vaulx-en-Velin, and the Jacques-Brel high school in Vénissieux, as reported by Lyon Capitale.

In a joint public statement covered by Lyon Capitale, the striking establishments outlined specific operational demands. Teachers are calling for strict student caps per classroom: a maximum of 15 students in vocational training certificate classes (CAP), no more than 20 students in Tenth Grade (Seconde) and vocational-technological tracks, and a ceiling of 24 students in Eleventh and Twelfth Grades (Première and Terminale générale). Furthermore, educators are pressing for smaller class sizes, an increase in split-group instruction hours, and the formal classification of these eastern suburban institutions under priority education schemes.

“The rectorate has not brought any satisfactory answer to our demands. On the contrary, the resources we have at the start of this school year are still very insufficient,” union and staff representatives stated, as cited by Lyon Capitale. Organizers scheduled a general assembly to determine whether to extend the strike action past the initial mobilization phase.

Security and Staffing Pressures Trigger Strike at Lyon Lumière High School

The unrest extends beyond the eastern suburbs into the city of Lyon itself. Staff at the Lycée Lumière, situated in the 8th arrondissement, announced a strike beginning Thursday, September 3, 2026, at 8:30 AM, according to Lyon Capitale. Teachers at Lumière released a formal statement citing critically degraded working environments.

According to Lyon Capitale’s reporting of the Lumière staff statement, the school learned in late July that a half-position for a principal education adviser (CPE) would not be renewed for the new term. This reduction arrives amid long-standing anxiety over a tense campus climate. Internal data cited by the staff revealed that the previous academic year recorded 150 alarm triggers and 10 disciplinary councils. Educators argue that chronic vacancies among secretarial staff and territorial support agents severely compromise student safety and administrative stability, prompting them to declare that welcoming students safely is currently untenable without immediate reinforcement.

As the rectorate evaluates the unified demands from Villeurbanne, Vaulx-en-Velin, Vénissieux, and Lyon, the autumn term opens under a heavy cloud of uncertainty.
