Lufthansa to Launch Columbus, Ohio’s First Nonstop Flight to Frankfurt in 2027
Central Ohio Secures First Direct European Connection With Frankfurt Flight
John Glenn Columbus International Airport will launch Central Ohio’s first nonstop flight to Europe in May 2027, connecting to Frankfurt Airport in Germany through a new service operated by Lufthansa Airlines. Bookings for the route open on October 20, 2026.
Lufthansa Launches Columbus to Frankfurt Flights
The new route will operate three times weekly on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays. Flights will depart Columbus at 4:20 p.m. and arrive in Frankfurt at 6:15 a.m. local times.
Lufthansa will deploy a Boeing 787 Dreamliner featuring the airline’s Allegris cabin experience for the flight to Europe. The aircraft accommodates 287 passengers across three service tiers, offering 28 lie-flat business class seats, 28 premium economy seats, and 231 economy seats.
Economic Ties Between Ohio and Germany
Germany stands as the third-largest source of international investment in Ohio, trailing only Japan and Canada according to state development figures. More than 750 German-owned business establishments operate across the state, supporting approximately 41,000 jobs. Local businesses exported nearly $1.4 billion in goods to Germany in 2023.
Thirty-eight German-based companies operate directly within the Columbus Region. State leaders noted that the direct connection will support ongoing economic exchanges and international commerce.
Today’s announcement is a tremendous milestone for the Columbus Region and Ohio. At a time of extraordinary transformation for our airports and our region, this new service establishes Ohio’s gateway to continental Europe.
That assessment came from Daren Griffin, President and CEO of the Columbus Regional Airport Authority. Dirk Janzen, Lufthansa Group Vice President of Passenger Sales for the Americas, added that the route marks an important expansion step in the United States.
State Funding and the Air Service Restoration Program
The Frankfurt route stems from JobsOhio’s Air Service Restoration program, established after a 2019 statewide listening tour revealed a sharper decline in regional air service compared to competitor states. The program uses revenue guarantees shared with regional partners to offset initial financial risks for airlines launching new routes.
JobsOhio has committed $36.8 million in revenue guarantees alongside $10.1 million from local partners. Since 2020, the initiative has helped introduce 32 new routes and 15 route expansions across five Ohio airports.
Industrial Expansion Drives Growth in Central Ohio
The announcement arrives during a period of industrial expansion in Central Ohio, marked by major corporate investments from companies including Intel, Bayer, and Anduril. The Columbus metro area added nearly 12,000 jobs between March 2025 and March 2026, registering a growth rate cited as more than 18 times the national average. The region’s population grew by over 21,000 residents through 2025.

Through the Frankfurt hub, travelers will gain onward access to more than 130 destinations across Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and India. State officials project that the connection will also ease travel for international talent and investors visiting advanced manufacturing and research facilities across the region.
