Luca Brecel Advances at English Open, Defeats Jimmy White 4-1
Brentwood, England – Luca brecel defeated Jimmy White 4-1 at the English Open today, despite a match described as lacking its anticipated intensity. The victory moves Brecel forward in the ranking event, while ending White’s run in the tournament.
The contest, held at the Brentwood Leisure Center, pitted the 30-year-old Brecel, a former World Champion, against the 63-year-old White, a six-time world Championship finalist. Despite a significant age gap, pre-match discussion focused on the players’ similar approaches to the game. However, the match proved to be of low quality, with a maximum break of only 95 points recorded in the final frame.
Brecel dominated the match, winning four frames to White’s one. The Belgian arrived at the venue having calmly taken a photo charging his electric car in London just 90 minutes before the start of play.
The win comes at a crucial time for Brecel, who has recently dropped to 41st in the world rankings and faces the risk of losing his tour card next May. This decline follows a period of inconsistent participation after his World Championship victory in April 2023,due to health issues. He has withdrawn from several tournaments, including qualifiers for the Wuhan and British Opens, and the league championship, and recently conceded a match after just two frames citing a need to borrow cues.
Brecel will now face Iranian Hossein Vafaei in the last 32 of the English Open.
