Love Greasy Food? This is the Danger According to a Lecturer at the UMM Faculty of Medicine

JAKARTA – Some time ago, Nasi Minyak had become a trending topic on Twitter. The culinary is in the form of fried chicken or duck with spices served with fried cabbage and chili sauce doused with oil waste . At first glance, the food menu is very appetizing.

This caught the attention of a Lecturer at the Faculty of Medicine (FK) at the University of Muhammadiyah Malang ( UMM ), Probo Yudha Pratama Putra. He explained that the use of used cooking oil for a certain time in food will have an impact on health. This is caused by the deposition of fat cells that occur in the small intestine, blood vessels, heart and liver.

“The disease that first appears due to consuming used cooking oil is called dyslipidemia or cholesterol in common language. Consuming food cooked with used cooking oil will increase saturated or bad fats which are difficult for the body to metabolize. Furthermore, dyslipidemia can be a risk factor for the emergence of other diseases such as coronary heart disease, stroke, fatty liver to cancer,” said Yudha.

He emphasized that coronary heart disease causes a high number of deaths. it is due to a blockage in the blood vessels to the heart. Even with a stroke that makes fat accumulate in the blood vessels so that it makes the brain paralyzed.

“Meanwhile, fatty liver is caused by the accumulation of too much fat in the liver, causing inflammation of the liver. As a result, hepatitis occurs which progresses to cirrhosis and leads to death. In addition, used cooking oil also contains carcinogenic ingredients which can cause cancer,” he explained. Yudha.

It is undeniable, eating oily food does add pleasure. But according to him, it would be better to start a healthier life. Eat healthy food and exercise regularly. Occasional consumption of oil is permissible as long as it is within reasonable limits. Especially those who have risk factors or congenital diseases.

“Starting by replacing ordinary oil with healthy oil or by using disposable oil. Then consume lots of foods that can break down fat, namely foods that contain PUFA (polyunsaturated fatty acids) or MUFA (monounsaturated fatty acids) such as avocados, nuts, canola oil. , tuna and salmon,” he said.

Yudha also appealed to the public to frequently check cholesterol levels. So that when there is a buildup or high cholesterol levels, it can be treated immediately. He emphasized that prevention is a better effort than cure.
