Louisiana Woman Claims ‘Mermaid’ Status After Trespassing, Allegedly Attacking deputy
Marion, Louisiana – A Louisiana woman’s attempt at a late-night swim took a bizarre turn when she allegedly attacked a responding sheriff’s deputy after being found trespassing on private property. The incident, which unfolded in November but came to light this week with the suspect’s arrest, has garnered attention for its unusual circumstances and the suspect’s unconventional defense.
Initial Complaint and Discovery
According to the union Parish sheriff’s Office, deputies were dispatched to a residence in the Linville community on a report of a trespassing individual. The caller reported a neighbor was screaming and refusing to leave their property after being previously warned. Upon arrival, authorities discovered 41-year-old Erin Elizabeth Sutton of Marion swimming nude in a pond located on the complainant’s land.
sutton initially refused to cooperate with the deputy, reportedly stating she was “trying to be a mermaid,” according to a Facebook post from the Sheriff’s Office.
Escalation and Arrest
After repeated requests to exit the pond,Sutton eventually complied. Though, due to cold temperatures, emergency medical services were called to assess her condition. As the deputy attempted to warm Sutton inside a nearby residence, she allegedly charged at him.
Despite deploying a taser, which proved ineffective, the deputy was able to subdue Sutton after a physical struggle. Authorities stated she continued to resist, kicking and punching the deputy before being restrained. During transport to a medical facility, sutton allegedly threatened to harm the deputies and paramedics involved.
Following medical evaluation, arrest warrants were obtained from Louisiana’s Third Judicial District Court. Sutton surrendered to deputies on January 6, 2025, and now faces multiple charges, including three counts of resisting an officer with force or violence, two counts of public intimidation, two counts of battery of a police officer, disturbing the peace/drunkenness, and criminal trespassing. Her bond was set at $62,000.
Ongoing Investigation and Legal Depiction
As of this writing, the Union Parish Sheriff’s Office has not received a response to their inquiries for additional comment. It remains unclear if Sutton has retained legal counsel. This case continues to be investigated, with authorities piecing together the sequence of events leading to SuttonS arrest.
This incident highlights the challenges law enforcement officers face when responding to unusual calls and emphasizes the importance of public safety and compliance with lawful orders. The details surrounding Sutton’s alleged actions and her “mermaid” claim continue to draw attention, as the case progresses through the legal system.
