Maine Residents Have Multiple Options for Replacing Lost or Stolen Credentials
Accidents happen. Wallets get lost, purses get stolen, and sometimes, driver’s licenses and identification cards disappear. If you’re a Maine resident in this situation, don’t worry.The Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) offers several convenient ways to obtain a duplicate.
Before proceeding, be aware that you might potentially be required to provide proof of legal presence and Maine residency
to get your duplicate. Also, a $5 fee applies.
Three Paths to a Duplicate License or ID
Maine offers three distinct methods for replacing your lost or stolen driver’s license or identification card:
Option 1: Online Renewal/Replacement Service
Many Maine drivers are eligible to use the BMV’s online renewal/replacement service. This option is available to most licensed drivers and Maine ID card holders, but not to commercial driver license (CDL) holders.
To use this service,you will need:
- Your Social Security number
- A valid Visa or MasterCard credit card
- A printer
Option 2: Visit a Branch Office or Mobile Unit
For those who prefer in-person assistance,visiting a branch office or mobile unit location is a viable option. Be sure to bring the necessary documentation.
Requirements for in-person visits:
- Two documents to prove identification.One must show your date of birth, and the other must bear your written signature.
- A completed form (PDF) stating that the license/identification card is not in your possession.
Option 3: Mail a Written Request
You can also obtain a duplicate license or ID by mailing a written request to the BMV.This method is especially useful for those who are out of state or out of the country.
Your written request must include:
- Your name
- date of birth
- Current address
- A brief statement certifying that the original license/identification card is not in your possession
- An description of what happened to your original license/ID
- A $5 fee
