Lorenzo Musetti defeats Matteo Arnaldi in Lyon ATP derby
Lorenzo Musetti defeated fellow Italian Matteo Arnaldi 6-1, 6-4 in one hour and 19 minutes during the opening round of the Grand Prix Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes in Lyon. The match took place on the indoor hard courts of the ATP 250 tournament, marking one of three matches featuring Italians on the opening day of the main draw alongside a total tournament prize pool of €757,320.
How the Opening Set Unfolded
Musetti dominated the first set by breaking Arnaldi’s serve three times to seal a 6-1 scoreline. The opening frame was entirely one-sided as the sixth-seeded Carrara native dictated the match. The tournament occupies the slot formerly held by Marseille, featuring a total prize pool of €757,320.
The Extended Ninth Game in the Second Set
The second set proved significantly more competitive as Arnaldi fought back to level at 4-4. The turning point arrived during an exhausting ninth game that spanned 13 points and lasted ten minutes, where Musetti successfully defended four break points. Musetti secured the decisive break immediately afterward before closing out the match on his first match point, aided by a very solid service performance that included 5 aces, 70% of first serves in play, and 76% of points won on his first serve.
The victory extends Musetti’s head-to-head record against Arnaldi to six wins in as many encounters, having previously also defeated him in five prior meetings across all levels, including a meeting this year in Washington that ended in a retirement. It is never easy to play against a friend, we have an excellent relationship and have known each other for a very long time,
Musetti told ANSA after the match, adding that I started very well and felt the ball very well,
I haven’t played much this year, and every win counts, I am really happy with the result and how I managed the final games,
I have experienced difficult moments in recent months, but I also have much more experience, and when I take to the court I really focus only on the match plan, with fewer distractions,
and that he kept his focus strictly on the tactical plan.
Next Round Scenarios in Lyon
Ranked 26th in the world, Musetti advances to the second round to face the winner of the match between 89th-ranked Lorenzo Sonego and 17-year-old French player Moise Kouamé, who is ranked 194th. For the 26th-ranked Carrara player and sixth seed, this could set up another all-Italian derby in the round of 16 if Sonego defeats the 2009-born French prospect. Kouamé is contending for a qualification spot at the Next Gen ATP Finals scheduled for December 9 to 13 in Reggio Calabria.
