Arthur Gea Stuns Ben Shelton at Shanghai Masters
France’s world number 56 Arthur Gea defeated third seed Ben Shelton 7-6(5), 7-6(3) in the third round of the Shanghai Masters on Sunday, marking the biggest casualty of the tournament so far. Shelton pointed to physical readiness and jet lag following a busy stretch that included the US Open final and Davis Cup play.
Physical Toll and Tour Demands
Shelton admitted post-match that his body was not ready for the demands of the match. The world number four skipped the Japan Open that ended the previous week due to fitness concerns following his defeat to Alexander Zverev in the US Open final and his appearances at the Davis Cup last month. I got outplayed today,
Shelton told reporters, noting that jet lag had also taken a toll during the Asian swing.
Gea capitalized on the momentum from a breakout year that included capturing his first ATP title in July in Los Cabos. The young Frenchman stated that he has felt more confident on the court recently. He will face 13th seed Jakub Mensik of the Czech Republic in the next round of the tournament.
Alexander Zverev Fends Off Quentin Halys
Top seed Alexander Zverev needed three sets to overcome another Frenchman, Quentin Halys, winning 6-4, 6-7(8), 6-3 to reach the last 16. Zverev moved somewhat uncomfortably toward the end of the grueling encounter. He plays unbelievably aggressive and serves incredibly,
Zverev said of Halys. The German world number two is actively closing in on Jannik Sinner’s number one ranking, with Sinner absent from Shanghai due to injury.
Zverev experienced a frustrating second-set tie-break where he squandered two match points before Halys forced a deciding set with an overhead smash. Zverev regrouped in the third set, breaking early for a 2-0 lead and securing the win behind his reliable serve. He advances to face Kazakhstan’s 19th seed Alexander Bublik.
