Lone Star College Partners With Five Texas Universities for Guaranteed Degree Transfers
Guaranteed Transfer Pathways Establish Six-Year Credit Protection for Texas Students
Lone Star College System signed Guaranteed Transfer Partnership Agreements on Oct. 28, creating 50 distinct degree pathways with five Texas universities for 100,000 students. The framework protects continuous-enrolled students from losing credits if course requirements change over a six-year window, Community Impact reported.
The framework forms part of the institution’s Do the Thing & Be the Bridge: 2025–2030 strategic plan. According to lonestar.edu, the initiative targets a 70% university graduation rate for first-time transfer students.
Students Apply Dual Credits Toward Three Degrees
High school students taking dual credit courses can apply their credits simultaneously toward a high school diploma, an associate degree, and a bachelor’s degree at any of the five partner universities.
Deborah Bordelon, University of Houston-Downtown interim president, noted during the Oct. 28 signing ceremony that the agreement establishes mutual accountability without reducing academic criteria. “We are not watering down standards; rather, we are holding each other to higher standards,” Bordelon said, per Community Impact reporting.
Operational Rollout Begins in Fall 2027
The operational rollout is scheduled to take effect in fall 2027, according to lonestar.edu details. State Sen. Paul Bettencourt, chair of the Texas Senate Committee on Higher Education, stated at the public ceremony that the system provides a clear roadmap for students choosing higher education options.
Chancellor Mario K. Castillo acknowledged the shared commitment among the participating institutions during the signing event. “One of the things I underestimated, and I’ll fully admit I miscalculated, is the concern and love that our university partners have for their students,” Castillo told Community Impact. “At the end of the day, they are not my or your students; they’re all our students.”

Additional Program Objectives
Thousands of students come to Lone Star College System each year with a particular plan in mind for themselves—they want to earn an associate degree with us, transfer to a four-year university to earn a bachelor’s degree and build a career that will support themselves and their families,
