Liverpool Announce 22-man Champions League Squad, Chiesa Omitted
Liverpool have confirmed their 22-player squad for the Champions League, with Federico Chiesa not included in the ‘List A’ roster for the opening stages of the competition. UEFA regulations require teams to register a maximum of 25 players in their ‘List A’ squad, with a minimum of eight places reserved for locally-trained or homegrown players – defined as those trained by their club or another club within the same national association for at least three years between the ages of 15 and 21.
liverpool’s squad includes eight new signings: Florian Wirtz, Alexander Isak, Hugo Ekitike, Jeremie Frimpong, Milos kerkez, Giovanni Leoni, giorgi Mamardashvili and Freddie Woodman. However, the club is limited to 17 non-homegrown players, leading to Chiesa’s exclusion. Rio Ngumoha, signed last year, is also considered a non-homegrown player and has not been registered.
Young players Trey Nyoni and Jayden Danns, who both featured in last season’s Champions League, are eligible but will be registered on ’List B’ due to their age and club-trained status. ‘List B’ has no player limit and can be updated before each fixture.
UEFA regulations state a player can be registered on List B if born on or after January 1,2004,and has been eligible to play for the club for an uninterrupted period of two years,or a total of three consecutive years with a maximum of one loan period to a club from the same association for no longer than one year. Players aged 16 can be registered on List B if they have been registered with the club for the previous two years without interruption.
should Liverpool advance to the knockout stages – the top eight qualify directly for the round of 16, while teams finishing ninth to 24th enter a play-off – they can amend their ‘List A’ squad by adding three new eligible players, maintaining the 25-player limit.
