Little Lucy’s says catering truck was stolen and recovered with missing gear
How the Catering Truck Disappeared and Returned
The bright pink, 24-foot catering truck had been parked at a repair shop in central north Austin for mechanical maintenance, according to general manager Noah Loin. When staff went to retrieve the vehicle on Saturday morning, it was missing. Loin stated that the repair shop owner cooperated fully with the investigation and that the business held no blame toward the shop. We arranged to pick it up on Saturday morning, and when we went to go pick it up, it wasn’t there,
Loin explained. We called the police, tried to keep our hopes up and just, you know, not get too stressed out about it.
After posting about the theft on social media, Little Lucy’s received multiple tips from the public. One tip indicated the vehicle might be located at the Austin Community College campus. Loin drove to the site, spotted the truck, and immediately notified local law enforcement. Officers cleared the vehicle, allowing the team to inspect the interior. [We] went right up there, drove around for a little bit, and sure enough, we found Eleanor,
Loin said.
What Was Stolen and What Remains Missing
While the truck, known as Eleanor, was recovered with only a missing window, the interior had been completely cleared of operating gear. Loin reported that thieves took a donut robot machine, a generator, mixers, a food processor, speakers, paper bags, chocolate sauces, sugar, and flour. And just the whole place was trash, basically,
Loin said.
The total value of the missing equipment and inventory is estimated between $20,000 and $25,000. Despite the substantial loss, Loin expressed relief that the vehicle itself was found, noting that a permanent loss would have forced the business to cancel upcoming events.
Financial Impact on Austin Food Truck Operations
According to data compiled by Roaming Hunger, renting a food truck for catering in the local market averages $1,247, with typical bookings ranging from $800 to $2,500 depending on menu complexity and guest count. Little Lucy’s has operated its physical food truck on Rainey Street for 13 years, while the stolen catering truck has been in service for a decade. Loin noted this incident stands as the biggest event as far as something shocking and disappointing.
Next Steps for Event Scheduling
With multiple catering commitments scheduled toward the end of the month, Little Lucy’s management is actively working on replacement strategies for the stolen machinery and supplies. We’re figuring out ways to get it done and cover those things until we can get the stuff replaced,
he said.
The investigation into the missing equipment remains ongoing as local police review the recovered vehicle and public tips.
