Lipolysis injections, a popular cosmetic treatment for localized fat reduction, are gaining traction in the Asia-Pacific region, including the Philippines.
Experts differentiate the effects of lipolysis injections from GLP-1 family obesity medications. Park Je-young, director of Apgujeong oracle Dermatology, explained, “While GLP-1 is effective for overall body weight loss, targeted treatments like lipolysis injections can lead to rapid fat reduction in specific areas, such as the face.”
LG Chem’s Bellacoline has enhanced its market position through improved manufacturing processes, reducing the potential for sediment and thereby improving product quality. The product has achieved a 50% domestic market share within a year of its launch and is exploring international expansion, including potential entry into the Chinese market.
Other companies are entering the market with different formulations.Medytox submitted an application to the KFDA in 2023 for ‘Newb,’ which utilizes deoxycholic acid (CA). The company is currently awaiting approval. Newb is reported to have fewer side effects, such as pain, swelling, bruising, and pigmentation, due to its lower surfactant content compared to conventional deoxycholic acid formulations.

Despite the advancements, concerns regarding side effects persist. The outcomes of lipolysis injections can vary significantly depending on the practitioner’s technique, the injection site, and the dosage administered. Procedures performed by non-specialists carry a risk of serious complications, including nerve damage and inflammation, necessitating caution. Experts emphasize the importance of undergoing such procedures only after thorough consultation with experienced medical professionals.
An official from the Korea Institute of Health and Medical Research noted,”While ingredients like DCA,Choline alposcerate (GPC),amino-pillin,steroids,caffeine,and hyaluronidase are commonly used in lipolysis treatments,there is a lack of standardized protocols regarding the type of formulation,ingredient ratios,dosage,injection timing,and the number of treatments. Further research is needed to establish clear guidelines and confirm efficacy and safety.”
