Lionel Messi Receives Princess of Asturias Award in Spain
Lionel Messi and Antonela Roccuzzo traveled to Oviedo, Spain, where the Argentine football star received the Princess of Asturias Award for Sport and met Princess Leonor.
Return to Spain for a Royal Reception
Messi and Roccuzzo flew to Asturias for the ceremony, returning to the country where they lived for years during Messi’s career with Barcelona F.C. The Argentine forward was named this year’s sport recipient, joining other honorees across multiple disciplines at the Hotel de la Reconquista.
During the morning reception, Roccuzzo wore a grey suit, with the couple holding hands as they met Princess Leonor. In the evening, Messi met the Princess again to receive his diploma on stage, shaking hands as King Felipe VI, Queen Letizia, and Princess Sofia applauded from the audience.

Messi and Others Receive Awards for Diverse Achievements
The award committee recognized Messi for his dazzling talent, exceptional sporting career, and ongoing charitable work, describing him as a model of overcoming challenges. Other honorees for the 2026 edition include Patti Smith for the Arts, Julian Barnes for Letters, Timothy Garton Ash for Social Sciences, and Christina Koch for Concord.
Thousands Gather Outside Hotel La Reconquista
Messi’s arrival created a significant public gathering outside the Hotel La Reconquista, with thousands of supporters waiting in Messi jerseys, holding Argentine flags and posters. In response to the crowd, Messi approached fans to sign autographs and greet individuals who had waited hours for his arrival.
A Message That Inspires the Next Generation
Back when the award was announced in June, Messi shared a statement about the honor. “I hope my story inspires many boys and girls to keep dreaming — through hard work and a love for sport — while remembering that what matters most is striving to be a good person and upholding the values that sport teaches us,” he said.
Immediate Travel for Inter Miami
Rather than holding a post-ceremony press conference, Messi prepared for an immediate travel and match schedule. Inter Miami faces the New York Red Bulls on Saturday, followed by an invitation to the Ballon d’Or Awards on Monday.
