Lindsay Clancy Jurors Speak Out After Mistrial Over Insanity Defense
Three jurors from the high-profile murder trial of Lindsay Clancy have spoken out publicly to detail an 11-1 impasse that triggered a mistrial after seven days of tense deliberations in Plymouth Superior Court.

Lindsay Clancy, 36, stood trial accused of strangling her three young children—5-year-old Cora, 3-year-old son Dawson, and 8-month-old infant son Callan—at the family’s Duxbury, Massachusetts, home on January 24, 2023.
Insanity Defense and the Core Question
Throughout the weeks-long proceeding, defense attorney Kevin Reddington argued that Clancy should not be held criminally responsible for the killings because she was experiencing severe postpartum psychosis driven by an overmedicated cocktail of psychiatric drugs. Prosecutors countered that Clancy was fully capable of understanding the severity of her actions.
Speaking in an interview with NBC 10 Boston, jury foreperson Roni Carlson explained that the panel easily agreed on the physical acts, stating that they were not trying to figure out if Clancy murdered the children because she admitted that she did. Instead, Carlson said the panel focused entirely on whether Clancy knew right from wrong at the time, noting that journals and testimony from family members proved she deeply loved her children and therefore “had to have snapped.”

Ultimately, 11 of the 12 jurors reached a consensus in favor of finding Clancy not guilty by reason of insanity.
“He was very arrogant, he really did not take anything that anybody said,” juror Paula Devlin told NBC 10 Boston regarding the holdout juror.
Carlson alleged that the holdout juror explicitly admitted to harboring reasonable doubt regarding Clancy’s guilt yet still refused to change his vote. According to Carlson, she had begun filling out the verdict paperwork with excitement when the holdout stated that he was still unwilling to agree to a not-guilty-by-reason-of-insanity verdict.
Judicial Instructions and Heavy Emotional Toll
During deliberations, trial judge William Sullivan repeatedly instructed the jurors that it was their duty to determine whether prosecutors had successfully proven Clancy’s guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. Carlson noted that the judge’s instructions had little to no impact on the holdout.
Jurors also described the severe emotional toll of the evidence presented during the trial, pointing specifically to the 911 call placed by Clancy’s husband, Patrick Clancy, after he discovered his wife following her suicide attempt and found his children in the basement. Juror Kellie Farina called the audio recording the most horrific thing she had ever heard, adding that it was something she would never stop hearing.
Reactions and Facing a Potential Retrial
Farina also described the prosecution’s case as harsh, while characterizing defense attorney Kevin Reddington as both entertaining and arrogant. Reddington told ABC News that the fierce emotional division surrounding the case stemmed from the tragic reality of three dead children. Reddington maintained that Clancy deserved an acquittal based on the evidence presented in court.
With the 11-1 deadlock remaining unbroken, Judge Sullivan declared a mistrial at Plymouth Superior Court, leaving Clancy facing a potential retrial.
