LG Electronics Aims to Redefine Robot Cleaners, Eyes “Zero Labor Home” Future
Berlin, Germany – LG Electronics is taking a bold new approach to the increasingly competitive robot vacuum cleaner market, viewing the devices less as simple appliances and more as refined robots. This strategy, unveiled by ryu Jae-cheol, President of LG Electronics’ HS Business Division, at a press conference during IFA 2025 in Berlin, signals a significant shift in the company’s home appliance vision.
Speaking to reporters, Ryu acknowledged the growing pressure from Chinese manufacturers in the robot cleaner space. He stated that robot cleaners represent a potential “pain point” for the Korean home appliance industry, and expressed initial concerns about their latest model, describing it as “inconsistent” before a strategic refocus.
“We decided it was right to look at the robot cleaner as a robot without a vacuum cleaner,” Ryu explained. “we have grate know-how in this area.”
This repositioning emphasizes the importance of artificial intelligence and advanced autonomous navigation – going beyond mere hardware specifications. LG is prioritizing a powerful System-on-Chip (SOC) for its AI-powered cleaners, though Ryu indicated they aren’t necessarily pursuing the highest-end Qualcomm chips, suggesting a tailored approach to processing power.
The company is actively leveraging its acquisition of bear Robotics, focusing on transplanting the firm’s expertise in indoor space autonomous driving technology. This integration aims to create robot cleaners capable of more clever and efficient navigation.
Beyond vacuuming, LG is also developing a broader range of robotic solutions. Ryu revealed progress on a next-generation robot, including the Q9 model, designed for natural language interaction with customers. He noted that hardware growth is accelerating faster than anticipated, paving the way for more advanced features.
Ultimately, LG’s ambition extends beyond simply cleaning floors. “The ultimate goal of LG is Zero Labor Home,” Ryu stated, “allowing customers to spend valuable time by liberating them from domestic labor.” This vision positions LG as a key player in the emerging market for complete home automation and robotic assistance.
