Robert Lewandowski’s future at FC Barcelona is under scrutiny as the Polish striker faces an increasingly uncertain role within the team, and his contract nears its expiration. Although Lewandowski has contributed 10 goals in La Liga this season, he is significantly outpaced by Kylian Mbappé, who leads the league with 23 goals for Real Madrid, according to reports.
The disparity in goalscoring highlights a growing concern about Lewandowski’s diminishing influence, particularly as he approaches the conclude of his current contract. Rafael Hernandez, a journalist covering FC Barcelona, noted the physical toll of Lewandowski’s age. “In this season, he still presents a solid level. He has already scored 10 goals in the league and has the best finishing among the strikers that Barcelona can realistically afford on the market. However, at 37 years old, the effects of time are visible – he has lost some stamina and is no longer able to play full 90 minutes every 3-4 days. The rotations applied by Flick are therefore justified,” Hernandez stated.
Barcelona manager Hansi Flick is increasingly relying on other attacking options, notably Ferran Torres, who has scored 12 league goals this season. Hernandez believes Torres, while valuable, isn’t a long-term replacement for Lewandowski. “Torres is not yet a primary option in attack and, in my opinion, never will be. He stands out for his pressing and running, but his effectiveness in front of goal is too inconsistent and unpredictable. The rotation between him and Lewandowski makes sense – it increases competition and allows us to secure the best out of both, although we know that the Pole is definitely better, especially when it comes to finishing,” Hernandez explained. He added that Torres’s goalscoring record, while his best to date, still falls short of Lewandowski’s previous performances.
Barcelona has not yet offered Lewandowski a contract extension, fueling speculation about his potential departure. Reports have linked him with a move to Chicago Fire in Major League Soccer. Hernandez, however, suggests Barcelona should offer a one-year extension, albeit with a reduced salary, given Lewandowski’s contributions to the club. “Barcelona should extend Lewandowski’s contract for another year, but on the condition of a salary reduction, which is currently the highest in the team. I personally value him very much – he took a huge risk coming to the club at a difficult time and helping to get out of the crisis. He is a veteran who sets an example, brings a lot of experience and is still dangerous for the opposing defenders. Many comebacks last season were largely due to his merit. He is a mentor to younger players, which is important in the long run,” Hernandez said.
FC Barcelona is scheduled to play Levante UD on Sunday in a La Liga match. The game will be broadcast on Eleven Sports 1 and available via the Pilot WP platform, with WP SportoweFakty providing live text coverage.
