Lewandowski Future at Barcelona: Contract Uncertainty & Mask Struggles

March 23, 2026 Lucas Fernandez – World Editor World

Robert Lewandowski’s future at Barcelona remains uncertain as the striker nears the end of his contract and the club simultaneously explores potential replacements, according to reports. The Polish international, who arrived at the Camp Nou as a key attacking force, is now facing questions about his long-term role with the Catalan giants.

While on international duty with Poland, Lewandowski addressed the ongoing speculation surrounding his club future. “Regarding my future at Barcelona, what I said hasn’t changed. I’m taking my time to decide what’s best for me. I haven’t made any decision,” he stated, echoing previous comments and indicating a deliberate approach to his next move.

Beyond the contract negotiations, Lewandowski is currently navigating a physical challenge. Following a collision during a match against Villarreal, he has been required to wear a protective mask. He described the discomfort and impact on his game, stating, “Playing with a mask, especially on my head, isn’t comfortable. As a striker, I rely heavily on my vision, and the mask is right next to my eye.” He added that recent adjustments to the mask’s design have provided some improvement, allowing him to regain confidence in aerial challenges, though he anticipates needing to continue wearing it for another two weeks.

A notable shift in team dynamics has too emerged, with Lewandowski relinquishing penalty-taking duties to teammates such as Raphinha and Lamine Yamal. Explaining this change, Lewandowski acknowledged the importance of confidence in such situations. “It’s obvious that sometimes, when you lack confidence, there’s a moment of hesitation and decisions are made on the field. There are players who take penalties well. I’m ready, but when you feel like you’re lacking minutes, confidence, feel, and rhythm, it’s better to choose the best option for the team. And whoever feels best ends up being the one who takes the penalties.”

Lewandowski also offered an update on his future with the Polish national team, admitting he has not yet made any firm decisions. “I’m not going to make any decisions; I’m not ready to make any. I still don’t know; it probably won’t happen soon. When I know it’s the right time, I’ll probably tell you. Right now, I don’t have that feeling,” he said.

Barcelona’s exploration of potential successors for Lewandowski suggests the club is preparing for all possibilities, despite the player’s continued presence and contributions. The situation remains fluid, with both the player and the club weighing their options as the season progresses.
