Leonard Lauder, cosmeticatycoon and creator of the lipstick index passed away

Cosmetics Titan Leonard Lauder Dies, Legacy Endures

The cosmetics world mourns the passing of Leonard Lauder, the visionary businessman who transformed Estée Lauder into a global powerhouse. His innovative strategies and keen eye for talent reshaped the beauty industry, leaving an indelible mark on luxury and consumerism.

A Business Empire Forged

Leonard Lauder, the man who steered Estée Lauder for nearly four decades, significantly expanded its reach. Starting in 1958, when the company’s yearly turnover was around $800,000, he oversaw its growth to over $7.3 billion by the time he resigned as chairman in 2009. Under Lauder’s leadership, the brand encompassed 25 total labels, including Clinique, Mac Cosmetics, and Bobbi Brown, available in over 150 countries.

Strategic Insights and ‘Lipstick Index’

His strategy for success, as articulated at a Stanford Business School lecture in 2004, included fostering “Sibling Rivalry” among the brands within his portfolio. Lauder also emphasized the importance of empowering women in top roles. He declared, “I always tried to find people who were smarter than myself.”

“Most were women.”

Lauder also became known for his “lipstick index,” a concept he developed in 2008. He observed that cosmetic sales often increase during economic downturns as women seek affordable luxuries. For example, in the US, prestige beauty sales rose 14% in 2023, even as overall consumer spending slowed (NPD Group).

From Family Business to Global Brand

The origins of the Estée Lauder company trace back to Estée Lauder’s mother, the daughter of Eastern European Jewish immigrants. She began selling moisturizing creams and camouflage products in the 1930s, developed with the help of her chemist uncle. She derived the name “Estée” from one of her nicknames and then the family surname, Lauter, for the company’s name.

Lauder’s net worth, tied to his extensive company shares, was estimated at $26.2 billion in March 2023, but fell to $15.6 billion by June 2025. Beyond his business acumen, Lauder was known as a philanthropist and social figure. His impact continues to be felt in the beauty industry.
