Wales Legend Leigh Halfpenny Returns to cardiff in Dual Role
cardiff, Wales – Cardiff Rugby has announced the signing of Welsh rugby icon Leigh Halfpenny to a short-term contract at the Arms Park. The move sees the 36-year-old return to the club where he first rose to prominence, taking on the role of kicking coach while continuing his rehabilitation from a recent calf injury with the aim of returning to competitive play.
Halfpenny, who spent seven prosperous years with Cardiff earlier in his career, has been training with the team for the past month. The agreement was finalized prior to the departure of former backs coach Matt Sherratt.
“I’m really grateful for this chance,” Halfpenny stated. “First to Jockey [Matt Sherratt] for bringing me in, and to the club for formalizing the arrangement.”
The decorated international has already begun sharing his expertise, having previously coached the Wales Under-20s and recently assisting the senior national team in Japan this summer. He expressed his enthusiasm for developing Cardiff’s young talent.
“This is the next step in that journey, and I’m really enjoying working with Cardiff’s kickers and their young back-three players. There is so much talent here, and if I can help them in any way, passing on my experience, then that is great.”
While embracing the coaching role, Halfpenny remains steadfast to resume his playing career. “Being a kicking coach is where I see my future, but I’m still enormously motivated to play and feel I have a lot to give on the pitch.”
A Return to Roots
The prospect of playing again at the Arms Park holds a special significance for Halfpenny, a product of the cardiff academy. “After coming through the academy and spending seven years here, I have always hoped to come back to the Arms Park one day. To be able to play for this club again would mean so much to me, where it all started. It would be a dream to finish my playing career here.”
