Lego to launch largest set yet, highlighting shift to adult market

Lego to launch largest set yet, highlighting shift to adult market

October 20, 2026 Julia Evans – Entertainment Editor Entertainment

Lego is preparing to launch its largest set yet ahead of the holidays: a 12,060-piece miniature version of the Basilica of the Sagrada Familia priced at $799.99, according to theatlantic.com. As toy makers increasingly cater to older consumers, this pivot away from traditional childhood play highlights a broader industry shift toward the lucrative adult market.

The Rise of the Adult Fan and the Shift in Toy Sales

In the early 2000s, Lego faced potential bankruptcy before shifting its strategy to embrace older hobbyists. In 2020, the company officially launched its “Adults Welcome” marketing campaign, casting brick-building as a form of stress relief, theatlantic.com reported. This demographic shift aligns with broader market changes. Just under half of adults in 2024 had bought a toy for themselves in the prior year, according to a report from the research firm Circana cited by theatlantic.com. Households without children now account for 55 percent of toy sales.

Daniel Konstanski, author of The Secret Life of LEGO Bricks, noted to theatlantic.com that company leaders in the 1990s were initially appalled by the overt enthusiasm of mature hobbyists, worrying it would tarnish the brand. That resistance dissolved as financial pressures mounted. By 2015, Lego released a model of the living room from the sitcom The Big Bang Theory, shedding its remaining hesitations about targeting adult interests directly. Recent releases now include models based on The X-Files ($199.99) and The Goonies ($329.99).

Lego adults welcome

From Creative Play to Inert Decor

Adult-targeted Lego products differ fundamentally from traditional children’s sets. Sarah Herman, author of A Million Little Bricks, told theatlantic.com that adult products are not simply more complicated versions of children’s toys. While classic sets provide basic elements for open-ended creative building or roleplay, adult sets serve almost entirely as decor. Once constructed, models such as a Gustav Klimt painting, a potted hibiscus plant, or Darth Vader’s star destroyer sit on a shelf as static trophies rather than inviting further interaction. Konstanski estimates that only about half of Lego’s current sets are intended for play, with the remainder meant strictly for display.

Simultaneously, kids today are aging out of traditional toys earlier in favor of screen time. To reengage younger audiences, Lego recently spent nearly a decade on research and development before rolling out high-tech bricks fitted with bespoke computer chips that light up and make sounds in response to movement. Despite these changes, the core physical property that enthusiasts call “clutch power”—the grip between two Lego pieces snapped together—remains constant, preserving a tactile link to the past even as the company’s customer base and product lineup transform.
