Legendary Google Chief Scientist Jeff Dean Launches AI Startup Discovery Loop
Jeff Dean, Google’s longtime chief scientist and employee number 30, announced his departure from the tech giant on August 5, 2026, to launch an artificial intelligence startup named Discovery Loop alongside three senior colleagues. The public benefit corporation aims to automate machine learning, science, and engineering workflows, backed by venture capital firms Radical Ventures and Khosla Ventures, with Alphabet participating as a founding investor and cloud partner.
From Google Infrastructure to Scientific Discovery
Discovery Loop enters the technology sector with a specific mandate: to tackle bottlenecks in science and engineering by automating the experimental loop. According to an announcement published on X by Jeff Dean on August 5, 2026, the company’s name reflects its core objective of automating how researchers propose, implement, run, and evaluate experiments. The startup intends to execute thousands of experiments in parallel to address complex global challenges.
The firm’s ambition extends toward elements of the 14 engineering challenges historically outlined by the National Academy of Engineering, a list that features targets ranging from reversing engineering the brain to preventing nuclear terror. Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai acknowledged the departure on X on August 5, 2026, thanking Dean for a 27-year run that helped shape modern computing.
The Founding Team and Research Pedigree
Discovery Loop’s founding cohort brings decades of collective machine learning experience from Google and its DeepMind division. Alongside Dean, the startup is cofounded by Sanjay Ghemawat, Oriol Vinyals, and Quoc Le.
Ghemawat, a longtime collaborator of Dean since their tenure at Digital Equipment Corporation, holds the distinction alongside Dean of being one of Google’s first level 11 Senior Fellows. Vinyals joins from his role as a principal scientist at Google DeepMind, where his contributions included reinforcement learning models and the AlphaStar agent. Le, a founding member of the original Google Brain team, brings foundational expertise in large-scale neural networks, including early deep learning experiments that trained on millions of internet images.
Venture Funding and Alphabet Backing
The initial funding round for Discovery Loop is led by Silicon Valley mainstays Radical Ventures and Khosla Ventures. Additional participation in the financing round comes from Lightspeed, Kleiner Perkins, and Doerr Capital.
Despite Dean’s exit after 27 years at Google, the corporate tie remains intact through Alphabet’s role as a founding investor and cloud partner. This financial arrangement ensures that Discovery Loop retains access to robust computational infrastructure while pursuing independent research goals outside of the core search and consumer products division.
Internal Realignment at Google DeepMind
Dean’s departure accompanies a broader leadership reorganization within Google’s artificial intelligence division. Demis Hassabis, who previously led DeepMind following its 2014 acquisition by Google and the subsequent 2023 merger with Google Brain, assumes the roles of chair of Google DeepMind and chief scientist of Alphabet.
Concurrently, Koray Kavukcuoglu, who served as chief technology officer of Google DeepMind and Google’s chief AI architect, takes over day-to-day operations of DeepMind while stepping into the role of senior vice president. These structural adjustments follow years of intensifying competition in the generative AI space, which accelerated significantly following market shifts in late 2022.
