Lee Kang-in: Atlético Madrid Link & PSG Stay – Winter Transfer Update

by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor

Atlético Madrid’s pursuit of Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Lee Kang-in continues, despite failing to secure a deal during the winter transfer window. The Spanish club has reportedly renewed its efforts to bring the 25-year-old South Korean international to the Spanish capital, though PSG appears resistant to a sale.

Atlético Madrid officially announced the signing of Nigerian international Ademola Lookman from Atalanta on February 2nd, with a transfer fee of €40 million including add-ons. This move came after Atlético’s attempts to acquire Lee Kang-in were rebuffed by PSG, according to reports. Lookman, a 29-year-old forward, has signed a contract with Atlético through June 30, 2030.

Sources indicate that Atlético’s sporting director, Matteo Alemanni, traveled to Paris in January to directly negotiate with PSG officials regarding Lee Kang-in. However, PSG and manager Luis Enrique were unwilling to allow the player to depart. The French club views Lee Kang-in as a valuable asset and is reportedly hesitant to weaken its squad, particularly with participation in multiple competitions.

Lee Kang-in’s limited playing time at PSG this season may be influencing his willingness to consider a move. He has featured in 21 games across all competitions for PSG, but has only accumulated 867 minutes in Ligue 1 and 171 minutes in the Champions League. Reports suggest PSG is also considering lowering Lee Kang-in’s salary.

Atlético Madrid had previously expressed strong interest in Lee Kang-in when he played for Valencia, but the transfer proved difficult due to the transfer fee and PSG’s acquisition of the player. The club is now again attempting to secure his services, potentially as a replacement for Raspaori.

French media outlet Foot Parisian reported on February 26th that Lee Kang-in may be open to leaving PSG, and that Atlético Madrid remains interested. However, the report also suggests that PSG and Luis Enrique are unlikely to easily release the player.
