Lee Greenwood Expresses Interest in Super Bowl Halftime Show Following Bad Bunny controversy
country music icon Lee Greenwood has publicly stated his desire to perform at the Super Bowl halftime show, following discussions surrounding the potential selection of Bad Bunny for the 2025 event. Despite acknowledging the slim likelihood of replacing the Puerto Rican superstar, Greenwood believes he would be a “great performer for any Super Bowl show,” according to a recent interview with the New York Post.
The possibility of a shift in performers comes amid growing debate over the NFL’s choice of entertainment and potential political implications, including comments from House Speaker Mike Johnson which Greenwood says he agrees with. Greenwood also suggested an alternative: performing his signature patriotic anthem, “God Bless the U.S.A.” prior to the game, noting a scheduled halftime performance at an upcoming Dallas Cowboys home game.
This situation echoes a similar challenge to the NFL’s halftime dominance in 1992. Facing competition from a live broadcast of In Living Color on Fox,which drew over 20 million viewers and prompted the NFL to revamp its halftime show with a Michael Jackson performance the following year, another network could perhaps capitalize on discontent with the current planned performance.Any network unlikely to secure NFL broadcasting rights could attract a critically important audience-potentially 30 percent of the expected 130 million super Bowl viewers-by presenting an alternative show. The current debate surrounding the halftime show also adds another layer of complexity to the pending ESPN-NFL media merger.
