LeBron James: Age, Arthritis & Adapting to a New Lakers Role

March 22, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

MIAMI – LeBron James played his 1,611th regular season NBA game on Friday night, tying Robert Parish for the most in league history, despite entering the contest listed as questionable with left foot arthritis. The Los Angeles Lakers defeated the Miami Heat 110-97, continuing their winning streak to eight games, even as Luka Dončić’s 60-point performance overshadowed the milestone elsewhere in the league.

James, 39, scored 19 points on 8-of-12 shooting, adding 15 rebounds and 10 assists for his 110th career triple-double. The achievement comes at a juncture in his career marked by a visible shift in playing style, one necessitated by both age and the evolving dynamics of the Lakers roster following last season’s acquisition of Dončić from the Dallas Mavericks.

The trade, while intended to bolster the Lakers’ championship aspirations, initially presented a challenge for James, who had long been the undisputed focal point of his teams. According to a statement released last summer by James’s agent, Rich Paul, the team and James were focused on “evaluating what’s best for LeBron at this stage in his life and career.” ESPN reports James opted into a one-year contract following the trade.

Recent games have showcased a willingness from James to prioritize team success over individual dominance. In a game against the Chicago Bulls earlier this month, James notably spent the entire first quarter setting screens and moving without the ball, deferring to teammates and not attempting a single shot. He then took over in the third quarter, helping the Lakers secure the victory. “It is a sacrifice,” James acknowledged, emphasizing his commitment to the team’s overall performance. “The team is most important. Everybody’s successful when we win.”

This adaptation is particularly remarkable given the physical toll James has endured throughout his two-decade career. As Sean Bryan, a primary sports-medicine doctor at the Hospital for Special Surgery, explained, the aging body experiences osteoarthritis, slowing reflexes, decreased flexibility, and chronic inflammation. James’s continued ability to perform at a high level, even while battling arthritis, is a testament to his dedication to physical conditioning and his basketball IQ.

The Lakers’ recent success, including a 114-109 victory over the Houston Rockets on Wednesday, has been fueled by this evolving dynamic. In that game, James scored 30 points on 13-of-14 shooting, punctuated by several acrobatic dunks. NBA.com reported that Jae’Sean Tate returned to the Rockets lineup in that game after a 14-game absence due to a right knee injury.

The Lakers’ winning streak has positioned them favorably in the Western Conference standings, with several key matchups remaining on their home schedule. However, James’s ability to maintain this level of play throughout the remainder of the season and into the playoffs remains a central question. His back-to-back games are currently listed as “T.B.D.”, reflecting the ongoing management of his foot arthritis.

As the Lakers continue their pursuit of a championship, the team’s reliance on James’s leadership and adaptability will be crucial. The question remains whether James can continue to redefine his role and navigate the physical challenges of aging while leading the Lakers to contention.
