briscoe western Art Museum & Houston Cinema Arts Festival Launch Collaborative Film Series Highlighting latinx & Indigenous Voices
SAN ANTONIO & HOUSTON, TX – A new film series, The Modern Era, will spotlight contemporary Latinx and Indigenous filmmakers and stories, launching this October wiht screenings at both the Briscoe Western Art Museum in San Antonio and as part of the Houston Cinema Arts Festival. The collaborative initiative aims to broaden portrayal in cinema and foster dialog around critical issues facing these communities.
The series, curated by Matthew Davila (Standing Rock Lakota Sioux), begins at the Briscoe Museum on october 4th with a screening of Gather, directed by sanjay Rawal, a documentary exploring the resurgence of Native American food sovereignty. Subsequent screenings in San Antonio include lakota Nation vs. the United States (October 11), directed by Jesse Short Bull and Laura Tomaselli, and Thunderheart (November 15), starring Val Kilmer and based on the story of activist Leonard Peltier. Each screening will be preceded by a presentation led by Davila. The Houston Cinema Arts Festival will host screenings of the same films, dates to be announced.
The Modern Era arrives at a time when representation in film remains a significant concern. While strides have been made,Latinx and Indigenous filmmakers and stories are still often marginalized within the industry. This series provides a platform for these voices, offering audiences access to narratives that challenge conventional perspectives and celebrate cultural heritage.
