Lanta: Mass Resignations Rock Newly Elected Council

Lanta, France – A political crisis has erupted in the slight commune of Lanta, in the Haute-Garonne department, less than a week after municipal elections. Four newly elected councilors have resigned their positions before the first council meeting, effectively leaving the winning slate without opposition.

Rémy Diaz, the incumbent mayor, secured victory in the first round of voting last week with his list, “Toutes et tous Lantanais,” garnering 59.68% of the votes, according to official results released on March 16th. This decisive win granted the list an absolute majority, eliminating the need for a second round. However, the swift resignations of opposition councilors have thrown the newly formed council into disarray.

The departing councilors – Marc Mengaud, Geneviève Couranjou Berrone, Christian Bru, and Florence Ranc – all represented opposition lists. Mengaud’s “Engagés pour Lanta, tournés vers l’avenir” secured 24.95% of the vote, earning them three seats on the council. Ranc, leading “Un nouvel élan pour Lanta,” obtained 15.37% of the vote and a single council seat. The remaining members of Mengaud’s list will now fill the vacated positions, leaving Diaz’s “Toutes et tous Lantanais” without any formal opposition.

The first council meeting, scheduled for Sunday, March 22nd, is expected to spot Diaz formally re-elected as mayor. The unexpected resignations raise questions about the future direction of the commune and the motivations behind the opposition’s decision to withdraw before the council has even convened.

According to data from the Ministry of the Interior, voter turnout in Lanta was 76.83%, with 0.74% of votes cast as blank ballots and 0.67% as null votes. A total of 1,346 residents participated in the election.
