Land Rover Defender Dakar: 635 HP Off-Road Powerhouse
Land Rover has unveiled a rally-ready version of the Defender Octa, engineered to compete in the Dakar Rally’s “Stock” category. According to M3 Motorcube, the vehicle features a 635-horsepower engine and chassis modifications designed to handle the rigors of competitive off-road racing while remaining closely aligned with the production model.
Technical Specifications and Design
The racing variant, designated as the Defender Dakar D7X-R, utilizes the same core architecture as the production Defender Octa. Novinky.cz reports that the vehicle is built for the stock class, which mandates that competitors use machines with minimal modifications compared to their showroom counterparts.
To meet the demands of the rally, the vehicle incorporates several specialized upgrades:
- Performance and Cooling: The bodywork has been revised to improve airflow, including a vented hood and larger intake systems to manage engine temperatures during sustained high-intensity driving.
- Off-Road Protection: Engineers added reinforced underbody shielding and adjusted the vehicle’s geometry to enhance approach and departure angles for navigating extreme terrain.
- External Equipment: The exterior features extended wheel arch flares, bumper cutouts, and roof-mounted LED lighting. To reduce overall weight, the traditional rear-door-mounted spare tire carrier has been removed.
- Dual Snorkels: The vehicle is equipped with dual air intakes, or "snorkels," to ensure the engine receives clean air in dusty, desert conditions.
The vehicle is finished in a "Geopalette" livery, featuring desert-inspired tones that reflect the sand and stone environments of the Dakar route.
Competitive Context
The Defender Dakar D7X-R is set to challenge established competitors in the production-based category, including the Toyota Land Cruiser GR and the Nissan Patrol. While this racing program focuses on high-performance off-road endurance, the Defender platform also serves diverse institutional roles.

For instance, the Czech Armed Forces utilize a specialized version known as the Land Rover Defender 130 Kajman. According to the Ministry of Defence of the Czech Republic (acr.mo.gov.cz), the Kajman is a modified 130-inch wheelbase platform designed for airborne units. Unlike the Dakar-spec racer, the Kajman is built for tactical utility, featuring a 4,100 kg total weight, anti-splinter protection, and a WARN XDC 12V winch with a 42.2 kN pulling capacity. It is equipped with a rotating ring mount capable of supporting various weapon systems, including the DŠKM and AGS-17, for use by a six-member crew.
The Dakar entry marks a return to extreme testing for the Defender brand, aiming to demonstrate the durability of the D7X-R platform under racing conditions.
